Helping Children Learn, Heal, and Express Through Play

Learn why puppets are one of the most effective tools in child therapy. Discover how puppet play helps children express emotions, understand behavior, and engage deeply in learning.

Puppets: More Than Just Playtime

Puppets aren’t just fun—they’re therapeutic tools. As seen on Sesame Street, puppets help children learn essential emotional and cognitive skills in a format that feels safe, entertaining, and engaging. But in therapy, their power goes even deeper.

As a licensed art therapist specializing in child development and neurodiversity, I’ve found that puppets are often the most effective way for preschool and early elementary-age children to express feelings and process behavior.

🎭 Why Puppets Work in Therapy

Children don’t always have the vocabulary or self-awareness to talk about what they’re experiencing. Puppets allow them to:

  • Project feelings safely
  • Explore complex scenarios without fear or shame
  • Reenact behaviors to understand and regulate them
  • Access their imagination, creativity, and empathy

By giving emotions to a puppet, children are free to express things they might not otherwise share directly.

Acting Out the Story—Again and Again

In therapy sessions, I often act out the stories children tell—sometimes over and over, session after session. Why?

Because repetition is how young children process and master internal experiences.

Many times, the puppets reenact the child’s own behaviors. This may include:

  • Tantrums
  • Conflicts with peers or family
  • Fears or anxiety-provoking situations

This is developmentally appropriate, normal, and—when guided by a trained therapist—incredibly healing.

Eventually, a moment arrives when the child stops repeating the story. That’s how I know they’ve worked through it. They’ve made sense of the feelings and behavior. And they’ve learned from the inside out.

🧠 Want Your Child to Learn and Engage Faster? Use Puppets.

Whether you’re a therapist, teacher, or parent, puppets can be a game-changing tool for emotional regulation, learning, and connection.

In fact, if you want a child to fully engage and process information more quickly, bring out the puppets. You’ll be amazed at what they’re able to show you—and how quickly they begin to heal, learn, and grow.
